Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander has signalled that legislation for Zones of Special Operations could be brought back to Parliament. He made the statement in the House of Representatives on Friday, 11 September, as the State of Emergency approached its expiry.

The earlier bill failed in the Senate because the Government did not obtain the required three-fifths majority. The proposal combines special security operations with community development measures.

Alexander said measures were in place to respond to threats and assured law-abiding citizens that their safety would not be compromised after the emergency period. His statement signals a possible legislative return; it does not establish that the bill has passed or that any zone has been activated.
