Almost 40 per cent of the Works Ministry’s recurrent allocation is committed to loan repayments, Works and Infrastructure Minister Jearlean John said in Monday’s budget debate.

John put the debt-service amount at TT$940 million out of a TT$2.378 billion recurrent allocation. She said the ministry was servicing 18 loans, with an outstanding balance of approximately TT$6.6 billion as at 30 September 2026 and repayments extending to 2032.

The minister said the repayments reduce the money available for roads and drains. The figures describe recurrent expenditure; they should not be read as a breakdown of the ministry’s entire capital and recurrent budget.
