HDC repairs underway after San Fernando apartment floor collapses

A bedroom floor collapsed into the apartment below at an HDC building on Jamadar Street, San Fernando, early on Saturday, 24 October 2026. No injuries were reported, but residents say they had raised concerns about the deteriorating flooring long before the collapse.

The failure occurred in Building Three, between upper- and lower-floor apartments. Furniture from the upstairs bedroom fell into the lower unit. Resident Gail Mohan-Thomas said the flooring had been cracking and that she had moved her son to another bedroom as conditions worsened. She said complaints had been made to the Housing Development Corporation for approximately three years.

Minister in the Ministry of Housing Phillip Alexander said an HDC rapid-response team was sent to the building after the incident came to his attention. Housing Minister David Lee said officials were advised that specialists had assessed the affected area and found no immediate threat to life or limb. HDC managing director Ronald Huggins said the corporation would review the residents’ earlier maintenance complaints.

Repairs were underway when the matter was reported, but completion and any broader assessment of the ageing building were not independently confirmed. Residents concerned about structural problems can contact the HDC through its published maintenance channels.
