Cuba began efforts to restore its electricity system after a nationwide grid collapse on Friday, 18 September. Authorities linked the failure, which occurred around 2 p.m., to a problem affecting high-voltage transmission lines in central Cuba.

The National Electrical Union activated a gradual restoration process. Reuters reported that electricity had returned to a small number of Havana neighbourhoods, particularly near hospitals, by late Friday evening, while much of the capital remained without power. That limited restoration did not amount to a nationwide return of service.
