Community orchard programme launches at Palmiste Park

A programme to establish fruit and food orchards in underused public spaces was launched at Palmiste Park, San Fernando, on Thursday, 10 September.

Agriculture Minister Ravi Ratiram said the initiative aims to bring food production closer to communities, improve access to fresh fruit and encourage environmental care and agricultural education. He placed the programme in the context of climate pressures, supply disruptions and crop diseases.

The ministry plans to use Geographic Information System technology to map and monitor the orchards. Ratiram also outlined proposed expansion to recreation grounds, schools and green spaces in HDC settlements, working with the relevant ministries. These are programme plans following the launch, rather than confirmation that orchards have already been established at all those sites.
